At every shutdown, Windows XP will clear your paging file of its content for security purposes. Temporary files and data are usually stored in this paging file, so Windows will clear it every time its shuts down because sensitive data are stored in it. Clearing the paging file slows down shutdown time. So, if you don’t really need that much security, you can leave it as it is. I used my MS Windows XP Home Edition SP2 for this demo:

1. Click ‘Start’ and then, click ‘Run…’

2. Type ‘regedit’ in the input box and click ‘OK’.

3. Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click ‘+’.

4. Cascade System.
5. Cascade CurrentControlSet.
6. Cascade Control.
7. Cascade Session Manager.
8. Cascade Memory Management.
9. On the right side, look for ClearPageFileAtShutdown and right-click on it. Choose Modify, or just simply double-click on the registry file.
10. In the Value Data box, key in number ‘0′ and click ‘OK’.

That’s it folks. Simple and easy. So, afterwards when you shut down, you should notice that your Windows will shutdown faster. If you want to change other registry, please be cautious because messing with registry can harm you computer. So, proceed on your own risk. If not, you should refer to expert for further advice, in changing computer registry.
